Ordering Hommos at a Lebanese Restaurant
From a classic bowl to Hommos with shawarma or meat, restaurant menus can offer several ways to experience the dish.

The easiest way to compare a restaurant's Hommos is to start with its plain or classic version, then explore topped preparations if you want something more substantial.
Start with the classic
A classic bowl gives you the clearest idea of a restaurant's base: chickpea texture, tahini balance, lemon, seasoning and finishing oil. It is a useful starting point when visiting somewhere new.
Then look at the variations
Many Lebanese menus offer Hommos with additional ingredients. You might encounter Hommos Beiruty, Hommos with pine nuts, Hommos Shawarma or Hommos Awarma/Kawarmah.
Think about the rest of the meal
Hommos works naturally as part of mezze. If several people are sharing, one bowl can sit alongside bread, salads, pickles, grilled dishes and other small plates.
Ask what is in a named variation
Restaurant terminology is not perfectly standardised. If a name is unfamiliar, ask what the preparation contains and whether the topping is served separately or mixed through the dish.
How to compare restaurants fairly
Compare like with like. A classic Hommos should not be judged against a heavily topped version as though they were the same dish. Consider texture, seasoning, tahini balance and freshness first, then look at the toppings.
Find places to explore
Hommos.co.uk maintains a fixed editorial selection of 15 Lebanese restaurants in England worth knowing. The selection is intended as a useful starting point, not a claim that these are the only restaurants worth visiting.
