Hommos Menu Terms: Beiruty, Awarma, Shawarma & More
Restaurant menus often give Hommos different names depending on the preparation or topping. Here is how to read them.

Menu terminology varies between restaurants, but terms such as Beiruty, Awarma and Shawarma generally tell you something about the style or topping.
Beiruty / Beiruti
You may see “Beiruty” or “Beiruti” used for a Hommos preparation associated with Beirut. There is no universal restaurant formula, so read the menu description for the specific ingredients and toppings.
Awarma / Kawarmah
These spellings are used for Hommos served with a meat preparation. The exact meat, seasoning and presentation can differ from one restaurant to another.
Hommos Shawarma
This normally means Hommos served with shawarma. The restaurant's menu should tell you whether the shawarma is chicken, lamb or another preparation.
Pine nuts and other toppings
Pine nuts are a familiar topping, adding toasted flavour and crunch. Other menus may offer herbs, spices or vegetables as toppings or variations.
Why spelling varies
English transliteration of Arabic terms is not standardised. A restaurant may use a spelling such as Beiruty while another uses Beiruti. Treat the menu wording as useful information, not as a fixed spelling system.
How to order confidently
If a menu term is unfamiliar, ask what the topping or preparation contains. This is particularly useful when a Hommos variation includes meat or other ingredients that may not be obvious from the name alone.
